Sometimes simple gesture drawing can be the most satisfying.  

There's a lot wrong with this pose anatomically, but I really like the rhythm and weight to it. It feels like it has substance and movement that I often lack in my more polished art.

More experimental shadows on silhouette sketches. Today’s edition: Coffee Drinkers. I sketch these in aqua and black and photograph in black and white to get an idea of how it will print up. Reference photos for these sketches are from my outings to a recent local farmers market.

Quick drawings could serve a variety of purposes, and it is not always clear today why an artist created a particular sketch. This one may record a painting Fragonard saw during a journey to Italy, or capture an idea he was considering for a painting of his own. Orpheus, identified by the lute, grasps for his love Eurydice as she is pulled down into Hades. The snarling animals near his feet may represent Cerberus, the multiheaded guard dog of the underworld.
