Freelancers won't cross the picket line: Pledge solidarity with the New York Times Guild!

After more than 20 months of bargaining with New York Times management, more than 1,000 unionized workers still do not have a fair contract. In order to get what they deserve — including protected pensions, fully funded healthcare, and wage increases in line with inflation — they’re ready to walk out on December 8, 2022. The Freelance Solidarity Project of the National Writers Union stands in solidarity with the Guild. As a union of media workers committed to raising labor standards across the industry, FSP and NWU believe that the working conditions of freelancers are intrinsically bound up with those of staffers. In that spirit, we freelancers pledge to support our Times colleagues by not performing work for the publication during the walkout or during any future Guild work stoppage, including a strike. We will honor the picket line. The Times Guild and FSP-NWU ask that freelancers avoid performing work for The New York Times during the walkout period, from midnight on Thursday, December 8, until midnight the following day — as well as during any future work stoppage. This includes working on stories and communicating with Times management. We also ask that freelancers encourage their audiences to support the workers during the walkout and future strikes, and sign and share the Guild's pledge to tell Times management: give your employees the contract they deserve.
