Bolivia has a thriving indigenous tradition called “ayni,” a word from the Quechua and Aymara indigenous languages used by the farmers, which means “today for you, tomorrow for me.” The word describes a larger cultural perspective of mutual respect and reciprocity that was clearly visible during this exchange.

@ai6yr #equalexchange and other fair trade organizations offer trainings for their members. Many advocates of #fairtrade point out that these kinds of cooperatives and producers should also be located in richer countries. Perhaps they can suggest how to find what you are looking for.

My farmer friend Susan will spend part of her birthday tomorrow with an old friend of hers standing by the highway in Cañon City with a banner calling for a ceasefire in #Gaza. More people are honking for support these days and fewer are swearing at them, she reports. On Tuesday, at our learning-action circle meeting, I'll give her the West Bank co-op olive oil she ordered through #EqualExchange. In a couple weeks, we'll plant onions.
