[EN] 1810: The environmental historians among you will probably already know. The Napoleonic decree of 15 October 1810 was one of the very first pieces of legislation to regulate the construction of establishments that spread "an unhealthy or offensive odour". The establishments were divided into three categories depending on the degree of pollution and different government agencies were responsible for authorising them. The project had to be publicised in advance and local residents were able to comment on it and raise objections. A major point of criticism among historians: It was impossible to close down businesses once they had been authorised! But should the law be assessed as negatively as some researchers have done?

[DE] 1810: Die Umwelthistorikys unter Euch werden es wohl schon wissen. Das napoleonische Dekret vom 15. Oktober 1810 regelte als einer der ersten Gesetzestexte überhaupt, wie Betriebe zu errichten waren, die "einen ungesunden oder widrigen Geruch" verbreiteten. Die Betriebe wurden je nach Verschmutzungsgrad in drei Kategorien unterteilt, für deren Genehmigung unterschiedliche Regierungsstellen zuständig waren. Das Vorhaben musste vorher veröffentlicht werden und Anwohnys konnten dazu Stellung beziehen und Einspruch erheben. Ein großer Kritikpunkt unter Historikys: Einmal genehmigte Betriebe konnten unmöglich wieder geschlossen werden! Aber ist das Gesetz so negativ zu bewerten, wie es teils in der Forschung geschieht?

[EN] An eternity ago, maps and information were posted here to trace the development of today's Saarland from the Ancien Regime to its affiliation to the FRG. Almost 170 years! The period under consideration in my project is not that extensive after all. The "long 19th century" (1789-1918) as a period of observation is also very ambitious. The exact period under consideration is difficult to pin down in terms of dates, as it is primarily about the effects of industrialisation, which was still in its infancy in the first half of the 19th century. It will end around 1914, as WW1, as an exceptional situation, greatly changes the issues of environmental history. Nevertheless, the aim here is to look beyond the horizon, as certain processes did not simply end in 1914 or 1918. At the other end is the year 1810. Tomorrow I'll reveal why this year represents an epochal boundary for environmental history...

[DE] Vor einer Ewigkeit wurden hier Kartenwerke und Informationen geposted, die die Entwicklung des heutigen Saarlandes vom Ancien Regime bis zur Angliederung an die BRD nachzeichnen sollten. Fast 170 Jahre! So ausufernd ist der Betrachtungszeitraum meines Dissertationsprojektes dann doch nicht. Das "Lange 19. Jahrhundert" (1789-1918) ist ebenfalls schon sehr ambitioniert. Der genaue Betrachtungszeitraum ist schwer an Jahreszahlen festzulegen, da es vor allem um die Auswirkungen der Industrialisierung geht, die in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jhds. noch in den Kinderschuhen steckte. Enden wird es um 1914, da der EWK als Ausnahmesituation die Fragestellungen zur Umweltgesch. stark ändert. Dennoch soll hier über den Tellerrand geschaut werden, da gewisse Prozesse nicht einfach 1914 oder 1918 endeten. Am anderen Ende steht das Jahr 1810. Warum dieses Jahr eine Epochengrenze für die Umweltgeschichte darstellt, verrate ich morgen...

[EN] It's been a long, long time. Unfortunately, for ...reasons, I haven't been able to use this channel for a while. But since I miss it and it seems to be an appropriate way to procrastinate over a temporary writer's block, I want to get back to it. At least I'm staying on topic. I've started by tagging all my old posts with the hashtag #envhistsaar to make them easier to find. (To be honest, it's mainly for me to find my old posts in the timeline. Either Mastodon doesn't have such a function or I can't find it). I'm currently working on what I call the "legal chapter". The aim is to describe all laws relevant to regional environmental history and their development.

[DE] Lang, lang ist's her. Leider konnte ich aus ...Gründen diesen Kanal schon länger nicht mehr bedienen. Da ich es aber vermisse und es mir als probates Mittel erscheint über eine temporäre Schreibblockade hinweg zu prokrastinieren, will ich mich wieder ans Werk machen. Immerhin bleibe ich beim Thema. Ich habe zunächst einmal alle alten Beiträge mit dem Hashtag #envhistsaar versehen, um diese besser auffindbar zu machen. (Ehrlicherweise dient es vor allem mir zum auffinden meiner alten Beiträge in der Timeline. Entweder gibt es eine solche Funktion bei Mastodon nicht oder ich finde sie nicht.) Aktuell sitze ich an dem von mir so genannten "Rechtskapitel". Darin sollen alle für die regionale Umweltgeschichte relevanten Gesetze und deren Entwicklung beschrieben werden.

[EN] There's a lot to do at the moment, so here's just a find from a book from 1958 about the Saarland as a "new federal state" that a colleague is currently reading. A drawn map on which, surprisingly, hardly any industry can be seen. Only the ironworks in Dillingen, Völklingen and Neunkirchen can be seen, with only the latter showing smoking chimneys. Coal mining winding towers are completely missing.

[DE] Aktuell gibt es viel zu tun, daher heute nur einmal ein Fund aus einem Buch von 1958 über das Saarland als "neues Bundesland", das eine Kollegin gerade liest. Eine gezeichnete Karte, auf der überraschender Weise kaum Industrie zu sehen ist. Lediglich die Hüttenwerke in Dillingen, Völklingen und Neunkirchen sind zu sehen, wobei nur das letztere rauchende Schlote zeigt. Fördertürme des Steinkohlebergbaus fehlen gänzlich.
