Dead of Winter (2026)
Dead of Winter (2026)
Grieving and lonely since her husband’s death, Barb gets into her pickup truck to go fishing on a frozen lake in the mountains. No sooner has she settled in than she witnesses a hostage situation at gunpoint.
Another movie I really liked, even though it was poorly received by the general public. Sure, I won’t be watching it regularly, but the way it made me feel was powerful. Emma Thompson is perfect!
Of course, you can write pathetic reviews like: “It doesn’t get much dumber than this. It’s the story of an elderly person with end-stage Alzheimer’s who goes from one stupid behavior to the next.” How can you write something like that, reread it, and say to yourself: “Okay, that’s what I’m going to post! It’s perfect!!!”
I wonder which is the more stupid. You really must not have experienced this disease to make any claims with such unbearable arrogance.
Others will say that the only positives are the magnificent North American landscapes. But we couldn’t care less about the negative reviews! Here’s what I personally think:
Yes, the scenery is breathtaking! We’re dealing with a very good thriller—edge-of-your-seat and very well acted. A heavy, realistic, and gripping atmosphere with a touching story behind it. Even if the main theme is the kidnapping of a young girl by a couple.
Emma Thompson takes us on a thriller set in North America. She’s still as good an actress as ever! She plays a woman trying to move on after the loss of her husband. It’s a success—suspense guaranteed. Not bad at all for the end of her career!
I read that it’s somewhere between Fargo (1996) and Taken (2008). Why not! Both are excellent.
Judy Greer is always convincing as a villain. I’d almost start to wonder about her…
The immersion is chilling! Brian Kirk has directed a very good film.
I found a wonderful review that will wrap up mine:
“The rest of the cast also includes Marc Menchaca, Laurel Marsden, Brían F. O’Byrne, Lloyd Hutchinson, Gaia Sage, and Cúán Hosty-Blaney. The power dynamics between these characters generate some subtle emotional moments. These interactions are supported by well-crafted dialogue. In terms of form, the Northern Irish filmmaker’s direction proves to be of high quality. His staging is meticulous, composed of fairly static and understated shots with carefully chosen camera angles. You can tell it has been meticulously crafted. Furthermore, it unfolds within a magnificent setting of this icy, hostile wilderness. This impressive visual style is accompanied by a very strong soundtrack, whose compositions create a genuine soundscape through their background notes. They effectively heighten the tension and fit the action and imagery perfectly. All that remains is an ending worthy of the rest of the story, bringing Dead Of Winter to a close—a feature film that, in conclusion, is well worth discovering.”
