eROSITA enthüllt Abweichungen in Temperatur und Form unser Local Hot Bubble

Unser Sonnensystem befindet sich in einer Umgebung mit geringer Dichte, der so genannten Local Hot Bubble (LHB), die von einem dünnen, Millionen Grad heißen Gas ausgefüllt ist, das vorwiegend schwache Röntgenstrahlung strahlt. Ein Forscherteam unter der Leitung des Max-Planck-Instituts für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) nutzte die Daten des eROSITA-All-Sky-Surveys und fand in dieser Blase einen großräumigen Temperaturgradienten, der möglicherweise mit vergangenen Supernova-Explosionen zusammenhängt, die die Blase ausdehnten und wieder aufheizten. Die Fülle der eROSITA-Daten ermöglichte es dem Team zudem, ein neues 3D-Modell des heißen Gases in der Umgebung der Sonne zu erstellen. Der Höhepunkt dieser Arbeit ist die Entdeckung eines neuen interstellaren Tunnels in Richtung des Sternbilds Centaurus, der möglicherweise unsere LHB mit einer benachbarten Superblase verbindet.

eROSITA relaxes cosmological tension 

The analysis of how galaxy clusters, the largest structures in the Universe, evolve over cosmic time has yielded precise measurements of the total matter content and its clumpiness, report scientists of the German eROSITA consortium, led by the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. The results affirm the standard cosmological model and alleviate the so-called S8 tension, while at the same time offering insights into the elusive neutrinos' mass and dark energy equation of state. The analysis is based on one of the largest catalogues of galaxy clusters and superclusters, also released today, and showcases eROSITA's immense discovery potential. With several more all-sky surveys being analysed right now, eROSITA promises to refine our cosmological understanding to unprecedented levels.

The first #eROSITA AllSkySurvey #eRASS1 detected 170 million X-ray photons. Of these, only 1.6 million were found within confirmed clusters of galaxies. eROSITA’s groundbreaking #cosmology results & the cluster catalogs will be released on Wednesday, Feb 14.

Daten der bisher umfangreichsten Durchmusterung des Röntgenhimmels mit dem eRosita-Teleskop weltweit veröffentlicht

#eRASS1 provides plenty of useful data for the scientific community worldwide: It lists images of the #Xray sky, individual photons with their sky positions, energies and precise arrival times. The software needed to analyse the eROSITA data is also included in the release.
During #eRASS1 from 12/19 to 06/20, #eROSITA found more than 700,000 supermassive black holes in distant galaxies (active galactic nuclei), 180,000 #Xray emitting stars in our #Milkyway, 12,000 clusters of galaxies, and other exotic classes of sources: #Xray emitting #BinaryStars, #SupernovaRemnants, #Pulsars. The ~50 paper highlighting 1000 superclusters of galaxies, a giant filament of pristine warm-hot gas extending between two galaxies and two new Quasi-Periodically Erupting QPE #blackholes

The X-ray sky opens to the world 

Today, the German eROSITA consortium released the data for its share of the first all-sky survey by the soft X-ray imaging telescope flying aboard the Spectrum-RG (SRG) satellite. With about 900 000 distinct sources, the first eROSITA All-Sky Survey (eRASS1) catalogue has yielded the largest X-ray catalogue ever published. Along with the data, the consortium released today a series of scientific papers describing new results ranging from studies of the habitability of planets to the discovery of the largest cosmic structures. Based on just the first six months of observations, eROSITA has already detected more sources than had previously been known in the 60-year history of X-ray astronomy. Now available to the worldwide science community, the data will revolutionise our knowledge of the Universe at high energies.
