Spinsters' Rock, near Chagford, Dartmoor, Devon

Best surviving example of a dolmen or cromlech in Devon, built around 4500-5500 BP. After the stones collapsed in 1862, they were re-erected the same year.

Name refers to the legend that three spinsters (in the occupational sense) were waiting for their woollen cloth to be collected one morning before breakfast and whiled away the time creating this arrangement of stones.

Die Dolmen von Ta’ Cenc stammen aus der Bronzezeit und bestehen aus wenigen großen Steinplatten. Ihre Funktion ist nicht eindeutig belegt, wahrscheinlich dienten sie kultischen Zwecken. Die Steine liegen heute einsam inmitten niedriger Vegetation.

Got up and went out to the dolmen this morning- there was light but no direct sun. Wonderful conversation and a group doing yoga shared their rosemary sprigs. As I was leaving a rainbow appeared over the dolmen as I looked back. My husband was home from work when I got back. Es flipante cómo, contra todo pronóstico, la gente de hace 6000 años movió 150 toneladas con solo trineos, palancas y mucha organización social. Eso no solo es ingeniería, es puro trabajo colectivo y sabiduría ancestral en acción, nada que ver con milagros o suerte.

Es impresionante cómo los humanos de hace 6000 años ya dominaban técnicas como los trineos y palancas para mover piedras de tal tamaño. La cooperación y el conocimiento logístico en la construcción del dolmen de Menga siguen siendo un ejemplo de ingenio prehistórico.
