Standard Photography (1995) was made at a time when the PC, with its curved screens, entered our living rooms and opened access to a new universe of digital information. The schism between the ephemerality of images and the manifestation of the device as a physical object in the living room was a novel experience.
Standard Photography is a photographic image created without a camera and outside the darkroom. Light-sensitive photo emulsion was poured over the curved yellow surface and darkened by the light in the studio. The image points back to its own creation—process, material, and time—while its glossy surface self-referentially mirrors the space in which it is displayed.
Standard Photograph, 1995, photo emulsion, dammar varnish, and acrylic on molded plywood, 33 × 36 × 4 cm, part of a series of approximately 50 works.
