"The head of a leading #SouthAfrican private #school has been dismissed following an #antisemitism controversy sparked by the cancellation of a sports fixture with a #Jewish school.

According to the SA Jewish Report, #RoedeanSchool’s Senior School Head, #PhutiMogale, left her post with immediate effect after a crisis meeting this week, with the publication reporting that she had in fact been dismissed earlier.

The development follows the emergence of a leaked audio recording – first revealed by The Common Sense – which appeared to undermine Roedean’s public explanation for cancelling a scheduled tennis fixture with #KingDavidLinksfield, a prominent Jewish #dayschool in #Johannesburg."

I attended Chabad #dayschool as a child. I have my issues with them, for sure, but one of them is not the quality of my secular #education. When I moved to public school in 10th grade I was well-prepared, and I went on to attend the college of my choice.

These NY #yeshivot, however, are a different story. They're attempting to create here what they've successfully created in #Israel: an entire generation of adults unable to make any contribution to society whatsoever; unable to make a living anywhere outside the #haredi community; unable to speak the language of their country; unable to act as informed citizens of a #democracy; and ultimately, unable to raise children of their own who are not similarly handicapped.

Torah-observant #Jews needn't be so isolated from the greater community.

Good for #NewYork for insisting that NY children be given the opportunity to become educated, fully-participating members of society.

Parents are being told to find another school for their children for next year.

"Does your Jewish day school expect students to understand Yiddish terms? When learning about Jewish practices, which customs and traditions are discussed? What does “Jewish food” look like at your school?

These are some of the questions that JIMENA: Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa poses to Jewish day schools as the first stage — a self-assessment — in its Sephardi & Mizrahi Education Toolkit, a new guide released on Thursday offering “content, resources, and strategies” to better teach Sephardi and Mizrahi culture and history and to make students of all backgrounds feel more welcomed and included."

My father was born in Newfoundland before it was claimed by Canada. He was declared Canadian while he was still a baby. I only found out this year that he was in the #residentialschools or #DaySchool. His mom was Mi’kmaw/English, and his Dad was Inuk/Welsh. His Mi’kmaw grandmother lived on a reserve, but I have no idea where his Inuk grandmother came from. I was raised on the land knowing that I was “Eskimo” (Dad’s term). None of us were raised in community. We were all displaced.
