On the ferry to Victoria BC to take part in a change ringers’ weekend at Christ Church Cathedral downtown. I grew up a block from the Cathedral, suffused with the torrential sound of the #bells on Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings. They are the 2nd biggest bells in N America (after the Natl Cathedral in DC) and ringing them is something I never could have dreamt of as a child. Some would call this a bucket list item. As a birder, I prefer to put it on my life list. #changeringing #bellringing
If you are in #Vancouver anywhere near Dunsmuir and Richards, we are about to ring the church bells for the new #pope’s election. #changeringing
Team photo of Great Gransden bell ringers after their practice this evening. Tower Captain Sheila G invited us all to run a practice on successive weeks and seven of us voluntered. Tonight was the last in the series and we've all benefitted from the experience.

We finally rang another quarter peal of Double Oxford Bob Minor on handbells. It has eluded us recently and we even failed before tea and biscuits this afternoon. Once the caffeine kicked in we set off again with some spirited ringing and achieved our objective.

1260 Double Oxford Bob Minor rung at Wardy Hill (Toads Acre), Cambridgeshire

Here is a panoramic photo of the interior of Great Gransden church taken this morning whilst waiting for delegates of my Ring the Sim training course.
Ring the Sim is when we silence the church bells by securing the clappers, and each ringer takes turns to 'ring' a single bell with all the other bells sounded using simulated sound relayed through speakers via a dedicated app on a laptop, connected to sensors on the bells! Easy!
It is a listening skills event.
Bell ringing is very 21st century!

in 1/2 hour I will head out to the bell tower to join the band in ringing for mass, my first time ringing anything other than practice sessions. I have been ringing since September; subtract two weeks lost in October and three in December and I have been ringing for almost five months. No, I’m not Christian; change ringing is a musical instrument, a sport of sorts, a maths exercise and a social space. We do “ring to the glory of God,” which I can totally get behind. #BellRinging #changeringing
Julia was duty ringing master this week at Great Gransden practice. We had a very successful evening ringing our usual repertoire. Julia called call changes (her own composition, not front back middle) and two plain courses of Plain Bob Doubles, from the treble! This was her first attempt. Impressive!

Eight of us at weekly tied bell practice this morning, using simulated sound. Started by ringing Rounds and analysing the striking. Then some PH5 (and analysis) followed by 'dodgy call changes'. Finished with conventional call changes. Excellent session. #bellringing #changeringing
new project requires a new #introduction: I’m a settler scholar on unceded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh lands (so-called Vancouver east end.) I write about form, figuration, in-betweenness and amongstness, in the C19 Atlantic and inland waterways. Newer projects on settler uses of early C19 poetics in placemaking; and the category of the material in #mediahistory. I print stuff, #run, #bird, and am learning #changeringing as a Masorti Jew. I post about book[art]s, history, pedagogy, dogs. #litstudies #histodons
On September 17th, I had my first bellringing lesson (yes, this is me looking terrified.) Tonight I’m gonna see if I can do what I did on Thursday: Pull the number 3 bell away and ring a series of hand strokes (with the lovely tower captain holding the tail and ringing the back stroke), ending by setting the bell against the stay. I’m “almost ready to put the two strokes together,” 8 lessons in. It’s so hard. It’s so rewarding. #bellringing #changeringing
