The main facade of the former Broome and Green fruit merchants building hidden away in an internal courtyard just off Candleriggs in Glasgow, and surrounded by modern buildings. Constructed in the mid 19th Century, it was possibly designed by Robert W. Billings.

The main facade of the former Broome and Green fruit merchants building just off Candleriggs in Glasgow. Hidden away in an internal courtyard, this rather elegant mid-19th Cebtury building has been swallowed up by the newer developments which now surround it and so is rarely seen by those exploring the city.

This is the Brunswick Street facade to the Simons, Jacobs and Co fruit warehouse featured in the previous post. This presumably give an idea of how the original 1883 Candleriggs facade would have looked before it was remodelled by Thomson and Sandilands in 1912.

The Simons family had a major impact on Glasgow's entertainment industry. Michael Simons, who worked for the family fruit business at the end of the 19th Century, is credited with saving the Theatre Royal in the 1880s and was also involved in the founding of the Howard and Wyndham Theatre Company in 1895. His son, Bennie Simons, was involved in the development of the Pavilion Theatre in the early 1900s.

The entrance to Glasgow City Halls on Candleriggs. This part of the building was created by John Carrick in 1885.

The lower section (where people were more likely to touch it) is made from harder wearing Pink Granite while the upper section is made from softer, easy-to-carve blonde Sandstone.

This is a feature commonly seen on older public and commercial builings in Glasgow.
