A former surgical technician at Cooper University Health Care in Camden, New Jersey, has been charged with stealing roughly $2.5 million in medical supplies and reselling them in South Carolina. Marci M. Staun, 44, allegedly posed as a medical‑supply vendor to sell the stolen items to a legitimate supplier, violating charges that include theft, receiving stolen property, distribution of prescription drugs and impersonation of a medical‑organization representative. Prosecutors say financial records show she collected more than $427,000 from the resale of the equipment.

The theft was first detected in early October 2026 when hospital staff discovered a significant shortfall of Medtronic Infuse bone‑graft devices and other supplies, with inventory counts not matching documented usage. Surveillance footage from November‑December 2025 captured Staun arriving with an empty bag and leaving with it full, and investigators noted a sudden increase in refill orders between December 2024 and July 2025 that could not be justified by patient care needs. In December, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office intercepted Staun as she attempted to leave the facility carrying the missing supplies.

Cooper University Health Care has cooperated fully with law‑enforcement, terminating Staun’s employment and reporting the incident as soon as it was discovered. The former employee is now detained at the Camden County Correctional Facility while the criminal case proceeds, and the hospital has reiterated its zero‑tolerance policy for theft or any legal violations.
