Saint Stephanie Alexander's Date pudding with Toffee Sauce was an absolute hit and an easy thing to make, to take to friends' place last night for dinner.

This much loved cookbook has pride of place on a bookstand on my kitchen bench.

The thing about it is, it is absolutely reliable. Good, tested methods clearly written. Gave me back my confidence after last week's #cakefail

I know I'm not alone in feeling the crushing disappointment of this year not starting from the best of places.

I intended to kick off 2023 feeling strong, healthy and happy.

I was also looking forward to getting back to work this week with renewed energy, fantastic connections, and thought-provoking conversations.

I even aimed to begin this day early and energised, with a fruit smoothie and a workout.

Sometimes things don't go as planned.

My day, week, and year has kicked off with covid. But that doesn't mean it's all over, 2023 cancelled.

The rest of the cake isn't ruined if the first slice falls on the floor.

Yeah, it sucks, maybe things didn't go the way we wanted, but there's a whole lot more left for us to enjoy.
