FINDS…
I found this hatchet in the grass when we moved into this house. How did the previous owner come to leave it here? Here they using it and then put it down, forgetting it was there where over the months or more it lay concealed in the grass?

I picked it up and looked at it. Rust on the blade suggested it had lay in the grass for some time. The wood of the handle appeared dry and was partially wrapped in electrical tape. Could I do something to restore it, I wondered?

First was removing the electrical tape from the handle. Then I used sandpaper to scrape off the rust, which was thankfully only surface rust, and oiled the blade. Next was doing something with the handle. I sanded it down then applied a coating of deck oil to moisten the wood and give it colour. Next. Filing the blade back to sharpness and removing the nicks on its edge. Now it is ready to resume its former role as a useful tool.

So, thank you previous owner. Your abandoned hatchet has been given new life. I will keep it in good condition.
