Thailand is on FIRE! Current air quality in Chiang Mai is over 150AQI. Reminder that this is *entirely man-made and entirely avoidable*. People’s lives are cut short (estimates state about 5 years shorter on average) and billions of baht of tourism money is lost every year so they can allow farmers this β€œluxury”.

Air quality index (AQI) is again over 150 in Chiang Mai today. The internationally recognized β€œsafe” level is 25. Thailand, in their infinite wisdom, declares the AQI levels to be double the international standard. That still leaves the current levels at more than 3X the β€œsafe” levels.

Headaches, sore throat, burning eyes, itchy skin are all common symptoms of unsafe air quality.

Drove into the old city last night and was shocked how many tourists were walking around. This morning the AQI is over 150… so I’m guessing by the weekend most tourists will be gone. Why Thailand doesn’t take air quality more seriously is simply beyond belief. It must cost their economy billions of dollars in lost tourism $. Now that they’ve successfully moved toxic β€œSmokey season” 2 months earlier – right into high tourism season – the costs must be astronomical.

Exciting progress from Thailand on their attempts to eradicate "burning season" (smoke filled air with severe health consequences): By banning crop burning during the peak burning season, they have now apparently succeeded in extending burning season to start about ~2 months earlier, to peak tourist season. *slow clap*

Air quality in Chiang Mai today is at 158, levels normally not seen until late-Jan or mid-Feb.
