Designed by Robert William Horne under supervision by A.B. McDonald and built around 1901, this is one of the few surviving traditional buildings in Kingston, which was decimated by the construction of the Kingston Bridge in the late 1960s.

At some point in the last few days, part of one of the columns on the facade of the Kingston Halls on Paisley Road in Glasgow has broken off and crashed onto the pavement below. As well as the risk to passing pedestrians from such incidents, this obviously has implications for the structural integrity of the building itself. While it's been temporarily shored up, it's clearly in need of some urgent TLC.

You might might think that they'd make up or this by being havens for wildlife and food sources for pollinators, but as an invasive non-native species such large areas of buddleja monoculture do not seen to attract wildlife in any sort of numbers. This photo was taken on a sunny summer's day, and there were almost no bees, butterflies or other wildlife visibly using the buddleja.

It's not hard to see where the buddleja which infests Glasgow's historic buildings comes from. This area of wasteland in front of the former Tobago Street Police Station in the East End of Glasgow is capable of producing hundreds of millions of wind-blown seeds every year.

When we lose an old building, we lose not just the architect's vision for its exterior, but all the other elements as well, like internal layouts, which can reveal so much about our social history. We lose all the little design features we all too often take for granted, but which make each building unique, like sculptures, and tilings and fonts and metalwork.

I may be being naive, but surely there's a way to require the refurbishment of listed buildings which are in such a poor state as part of the planning permission for new developments on neighbouring plots. This would be to the benefit of everyone concerned.

A view along Robertson Street in Glasgow, with J.A. Campbell's A-Listed 1901 rather beautiful Glasgow Style Office building lying abandoned and derelict amongst the new developments of the city's International Financial Services District.

The India Building on Bridge Street in Glasgow. This is the worst infestation of buddleia I've seen so far on a listed building.

Built in 1876 for Robert McGregor and Co who made stationery account books and paper bags, it remains an attractive and impressive-looking building despite it's current perilous state. Not surprsingly, this building is considered at risk of being lost.

Sometimes great bits of architecture survive because of what we do to them, and sometimes they survive despite it.
