Introduced in 1932, this was the first traffic light system controlled by the traffic itself. This was one of only two surviving Electro-matic boxes I've come across in Glasgow, with the other one being of a different (and possibly later) design.

Boxes like this might not be as eye-catching as some of the other things I post, but they are none-the-less a part of the city's heritage.

I was disappointed to see that the Electro-matic Traffic Control System box that used to stand on the corner of Oxford Street and South Portland Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow has been removed (top left: photo 2024 from Google Maps; bottom left: today; right: details of the box from 2023).

Globe and anchor sculpture, signifying Glasgow's global maritime trade, on the 1888 facade of the former South Branch of the Glasgow Savings Bank on Bridge Street. I think they're surrounded by oak branches, presumably indicating knowledge.

James Miller's rather wonderful 1898 Glasgow Style blonde sandstone tenement building on the corner of Bridge Street and Norfolk Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow.

Another wonderful example of decorative ironwork from the 1880s former Savings Bank on Bridge Street in Glasgow.

Love this decorative ironwork on the former Savings Bank on Bridge Street in Glasgow. This branch was built in 1888 as an insert into the ground and first floor of an older mid-19th Century tenement.

A ghost building on Oxford Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. I love the way the chimney flues seem to have been extended twice as the now-disappeared building was engulfed by larger neighbours.

The former Police Office and Barracks on Oxford Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. It was designed by A.B. MacDonald and was built in 1892.

Another bit of personal geekiness, but I love coming across old access covers like this Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Company one I found recently in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. Despite the company's name, it's part of an old automated traffic light system. The font for the ATM logo is just so wonderfully Art Nouveau.

A Classical style tenement with a commercial space on the ground floor on the corner of Bridge Street and Oxford Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. Thought to have been designed by Bruce and Hay, it was built in 1884 as a branch of the Commercial Bank of Scotland.
