The Broch of Gurness.
The Broch of Gurness.
April Re-opening for HES sites in Orkney
The Broch of Gurness, the wonderfully evocative remains of an Iron Age broch and village overlooking Eynhallow Sound on Orkney's West Mainland. It was built as a planned settlement some time before 200BC. The site was excavated in 1929. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/westmainland/brochofgurness/index.html

And some photos of the village around the broch.
(I was still holding to the idea that I could just wander around, looking at cool things and not try to put them into any context. Really. So--) I think mostly houses with house things and an occasional kiln or something.
The entrance to the broch and part of the interior.
I don't have many interior photos. I was too busy taking little videos. (If you ever need shaky short videos of a broch, I can help!)
I swapped out the second photo for one from the phone. Lighting is a bit off but it's wider view shows more of the room.
