‘Goodbye… but hopefully not forever’: Tinworks Brewery closes after Tinhouse sale is finalised

In an emotional social media post, the owner confirmed that the sale of the building had been completed, meaning both the brewery and its associated bar are now closed for good.

“Well… this is the day I’ve been dreading,” the post began. “We’ve officially completed on the sale of the Tinhouse. That means Tinworks Brewery and the Tinhouse bar are no more. Without our own venue, Tinworks simply isn’t a viable business. Writing that is incredibly hard after everything we’ve built over the last 10 years.”

The closure follows the announcement in February that the much-loved Llanelli taproom was set to close due to mounting pressures on the hospitality industry.

The owner went on to thank family, friends, and customers for a decade of support.

“To you — our customers, regulars, friends and supporters — thank you. Because of you, I got to live out my dream for a decade. Every pint poured, every event, every conversation across the bar meant more than you’ll ever know. I’ll be eternally grateful for the support you showed Tinworks from day one.”

The post leaves the door open for a potential return in the future, but highlights the difficult climate for independent businesses.

“I truly hope this isn’t the end forever. I’d love to see Tinworks return one day. It may take time, and it will need the right support for small independent businesses which isn’t there at the moment — but if that day comes, we’ll be ready to brew some amazing beers once again.”

The closure is the latest blow to Llanelli’s food and drink scene, which has recently seen the closure of two other popular restaurants, The Bryngwyn and Ali Raj, and the town’s Pizza Hut branch.

It also comes despite recent Welsh Government support measures, including a 15% business rates relief for hospitality businesses, which campaigners at CAMRA warned may not be enough to prevent pub closures.

Sad news this morning that Unity Brewing Co is closing down. Another great brewery lost.

Comment from the Founder, Jimmy Hatherley, is grimly unsurprising:

“Covid, Brexit and the cost of living crisis have made it impossible for us to operate without making a loss every month.”

Unity were small but very well respected within the industry and made great beers. If they can go under, who's next?

Reckon we may see some big names go this year.
