so i sort of figured out what is going on with vm bridging - the vm was using a bit too much ram so adjusted that to avoid swap and shut it down and shut down and rebooted host - ping problems - remove ip for primary ethernet on host and make sure brctl shows it attached to bridge - vnet0 is also attached, virbr0 shows up as a sep bridge id, both have stp enabled....once you have ping on host through bridge with virt networks showing up you should have ping on the guest - you use the physical bridge on host in virt network setup br0 or whatever you want to call it. it is complicated but if you want your vm on the lan it is needed #bridge-utils

you use the same sort of setup with regards to bridge with bonded or bridged connections - add inf to bridge and then bridge has the ip not the physical nics #bond0 #br0
