Damn. I knew, and then temporarily forgot, that "The Nervous Set" was a beatnik / Beat Generation era (inspired) musical, but I failed to pick up on "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men" being a direct lift from F. Scott Fitzgerald - who, while not a Beat author, can definitely be considered to be a Beat precursor. Heck, the whole Lost Generation was a direct influence, once you see it.

I love finding these interlocking webs betwixt different eras and movements. (And feel a little silly for not catching it sooner.)

Like, Long Hair by Paul Revere & The Raiders, released on Gardena Records in 1961.

Like Long Hair Review by William Ruhlmann

Gardena Records issued Paul Revere & the Raiders' debut album in the wake of the Top 40 success of the instrumental "Like, Long Hair," and much of it is in the same vein as the single, which is a boogie-woogie arrangement of Rachmaninoff's "Prelude in C-Sharp Minor." Pianist and bandleader Paul Revere and saxophonist (and occasional vocalist) Mark Lindsay lead the instrumental attack, as they boogie up such numbers as Gershwin's "Summertime" and also provide the group's covers of bar band R&B standards like "Road Runner." It's lively, if basic music, but offers little hint that the group would go on to make polished pop/rock in a few years.

Today in Labor History December 22, 1905: San Francisco poet Kenneth Rexroth was born. He was an anarchist, a member of the IWW, and considered by many to be the father of the beat poetry scene, although he never considered himself a beat. Orphaned at a young age, he had very little formal education, but he was an avid reader and taught himself multiple languages. He went on the road as a teen, working along the way as a cowboy cook, a wrangler, peddler and toothbrush maker.
