I think I might go watch a film that has summed up this year, with our hopes and struggles, better than anything else…
Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
In retrospect, everything led up to this moment…
Michelangelo goes for a ride in the Bat-Mobile.
The Penguin in this is played by Tom Kenny, aka SpongeBob Squarepants and The Ice King.
My main complaint about this film, which I have about many one-off Batman stories, is the need to include a large part of the ‘rogues gallery’.
I get the desire to apply the “cool idea” to as many bits of the Batman mythos as possible, but it ends up diminishing the characters as in theory each one individually should be a handful.
Here… it’s ok. Basically we get a “mutant” version of the main villains via the ooze. I.e. Animalised versions, like Rocksteady and Bebop.
Troy Baker plays both Batman and The Joker. Both seem to be based on the The Animated Series incarnations. I.e. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.
I think his Batman is solid and his Joker is 90% there. Hamill is very hard to reproduce.
In this film Michelangelo keeps nerding out about how cool Gotham is, with its noir blimps floating about for no reason, and penguin-themed gangsters with gadget umbrellas.
It’s also a little fun that the turtles are from New York which I think canonically doesn’t exist in the DC universe (or maybe is rarely mentioned) since the main US city is Metropolis.
Seriously, this is one of the best DC animated films…
