Between 1904 and 1908, German colonial troops committed the first genocide of the 20th century against the Ovaherero and Nama peoples in what is now Namibia.
This evening, we would like to discuss the lasting effects of the genocide and the shortcomings of the proposed ‘reconciliation agreement,’ as well as how international law and human rights legislation support the Nama and Ovaherero peoples' demands for reparations.
Discussion with Paul Thomas (spokesperson for the Nama Traditional Leaders Association), Almaz Teffera (researcher, Human Rights Watch), Andrea Pietrafesa (legal advisor, ECCHR) and moderated by Yannick Müller.
A joint event organised by the alliance ‘Genocide has no statute of limitations’.
