The artist, whose work often took a gloomier tone, faught for the Nazi regime during WWII, battling on the front lines in Poland Russia and Norway. However he has been credited with saying “In my work I can say with colors what I think of my contemporaries without being sent to a concentration camp” … a surprising statement to be sure.
