The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 Laptop Features Two Upgraded Displays

Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) has announced the Zephyrus Duo 15, a dual-screen color-accurate laptop with top-tier, high-performance hardware.

As was the case with the Zephyrus G14 and M16 laptops also announced today, the Duo 15 uses what Asus calls its Nebula Display specification.

High Resolution Dual Screens

The Duo 16 features what Asus calls its ROG ScreenPad Plus, which is an up to 4K, 14.1-inch secondary screen that lives above the keyboard. When the main lid is raised, the secondary screen automatically rises up to match and sits at a 13-degree angle that Asus says is ideal for maximum ergonomics and air flow. It features a four-directional hinge that allows it to slide back while raising at the same pace, and when at full height the two screens fit flush with each other to create what the company bills as a nearly bezel-free viewing experience.

Because that section raises up and tilts at an angle, Asus takes advantage of that space to take in 30% more air to keep the computer cool.

While the secondary screen has been updated, it's not alone. Asus also beefed up the main display to a 16:10 aspect ratio for more screen real estate that makes for a 91% screen-to-body ratio. The Duo 16 features two display options, both of which fit into the Asus "Nebula Display" specificatoin, which requires 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space, at least 500 nits of peak brightness, and a response time of three milliseconds or less. It also requires a minimum refresh rate of 120Hz for 4K, 120Hz for QHD and 240Hz for Full HD resolution.

The first display option is a QHD (2,560 by 1,600), 16:10, 165Hz Nebula HDR Mini LED panel with 512 dimming zones that is capable of an incredibly bright 1,100 nits of peak brightness and is, therefore, VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified.

The second panel is what Asus calls a "Dual Spec Panel" and offers the choice between two modes: 4K at 120Hz and 1080p at 240Hz. In the 240Hz mode, ROG Pixel Acceleration Technology will scale the Full HD image using four physical pixels for every digital pixel. The ability to swap between resolutions and maximum frame rates means that the computer can pull double duty for both digital work as well as gaming. Asus did not specify the maximum brightness of this panel, however.

Power Behind the Displays

The Duo 16 can be outfitted with up to an AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX Series processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU. It is also equipped with up to 32 GB of DDR5 memory clocked at 4,800Mhz as well as up to 2TB of PCIe Gen 4×4 in RAID 0. Asus adds that both the DDR5 SO-DIMMs and NVMe storage drives are easily accessible for future upgrades.

The Duo 16 also features a MUX Switch which enables a direct GPU mode that reduces latency and boosts performance by an average of 9% at the cost of battery life (which, for reference, comes from a 90Wh battery).

The new laptop features four USB ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, audio jack, and microSD card reader. The laptop also supports WiFi 6E.

Pricing and Availability

The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 will be available "soon" in Q1 of 2022, but pricing was not shared and is expected to be announced closer to launch.

Asus Unveils More Powerful ROG Zephyrus G14, G15, and M16 Laptops

Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) has announced an updated trio of its Zephyrus G14, G15, and M16 laptops. The G14 features an all-new display while the G15 and M16 see new CPUs and GPUs.

Asus ROG says the new line of Zephyrus laptops have the latest hardware, display technology, and cooling. Specifically, the G14 and M16 each boast one of the new displays to meet the company's internal "Nebula Display" standard, which it says ensures the best visuals possible in a laptop form factor.

Below are the features most important to photographers, as the Asus Zephyrus is one of the most powerful laptops currently available for creators (and gamers), and the updates appear to make that even more the case.

Updates Across the Board

The Zephyrus G14 is a portable and compact laptop that comes pre-loaded with Windows 11 and can feature up to an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS processor and AMD Radeon RX 6800S mobile graphics as well as a MUX Switch -- which allows the comptuer to prioritize discrete graphics cards at the cost of power efficiency -- for the best possible performance. It also sports DDR5 4800Mhz RAM and a 1 TB PCIe SSD for speedy workflows.

Asus says that a custom vapor chamber that spans 48.2% of the mainboard covers the CPU, GPU, and VRAM allows for about 50% more contact with the system components compared to standard heatpipe designs and increases thermal transfer for all the critical components. Additionally, the G14 has what Asus calls "Arc Flow Fans" that have variable thickness to keep airflow high while minimizing turbulence and noise. It features a silent operating mode that promises zero decibel ambient cooling capabilities that allows the fans to be disabled for a "truly silent" experience. This feature very likely is limited to less intensive workflows.

The Zephyrus G15 and Zephyrus M16 also see updates, and come equipped with up to an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS, and the M16 is equipped with an Intel Core i9-12900H processor. Both models sport up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU, a MUX Switch, DDR5 memory, and WiFi 6E support.

The Nebula Display

ROG Zephyrus G14

Asus says its G14 is the first of its ROG laptops to feature what it calls "Nebula Display" which offers a 120Hz refresh rate at QHD with a three millisecond response time and Adaptive-Sync for a smooth experience. It also supports Dolby Vision HDR with 500 nits of peak brightness and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut with Pantone validation. The display has been expanded to a 16:10 aspect ratio, which increases screen real estate without sacrificing portability since its small bezels offer a 91% screen-to-body ratio. There is also a "standard" Full HD 144Hz panel as an option for the new G14 as well.

ROG Zephyrus G15

The M16 is also receiving a Nebula Display upgrade and will offer a 165Hz QHD experience. The Zephyrus G15 is the odd man out here though, and will not feature a Nebula Display but will have a QHD 240Hz panel with 100% DCI-P3 coverage and Adaptive-Sync support.

Pricing and Availability

At the time of the announcement, Asus did not provide any pricing for the three laptop models, though the company says it expects to make them available in mid to late Q2 of 2022.
