NEAF 2026 Day 1
I Flew Across The World For This Astronomy Event
Two days at North Eastern Astronomy Forum and I gave myself one rule:
Talk to as many vendors as possible before my brain taps out.
First time at NEAF, flew halfway across the planet, walked in… instant overload. Gear I’ve only ever seen online, people I’ve only ever spoken to through a screen, now all in one room.
So I just started walking and talking.
Vendor after vendor, no plan, just conversations. Learning, questioning, and trying not to convince myself I need everything I see.
Also had a few “wait… you’re AstroPuNk?” moments which I was not prepared for at all.
This is day one. First impressions, first chaos, first look at how big this world actually is when you step into it.

Saving the Night
A Weekend at Lake Tyrrell | Inside the “Sanctuary” Documentary
I spent a weekend at Lake Tyrrell helping make a documentary about something most people never notice, darkness.
Teaming up with a talented French documentary filmmaker and astrophysicist Dr Kirsten Banks, we filmed Sanctuary, an upcoming international documentary exploring the global movement to protect our remaining dark skies. Under some of Australia’s most pristine southern skies, it became clear just how rare this experience is, and how easily it could disappear.
This isn’t just about astronomy. It’s about preserving a connection to the universe that humanity has shared for thousands of years. Because once the stars are gone, we don’t get them back.
Sometimes, saving the world starts with simply turning off a light.

ROOF GONE → WE REBUILT
A Storm Took Her Observatory… So We Rebuilt It
A storm in late 2025 ripped the roof clean off Anne-Maree’s observatory… the one she built herself
and yeah… it took the roof off her house too
priorities, right
so we showed up
kept her original timber frame walls, rebuilt the top with one of our custom AstroworX roof systems, and turned what was wrecked into something way more solid than before
now she’s got a fully working observatory again…

we all make sacrifices
this one just happens to track galaxies

STAR PARTY CHAOS
1 Night at a Star Party… BEST NIGHT EVER
one night. that’s all it took
rocked up to the Messier Star Party thinking it’d be a chill night looking at stars… yeah nah
ended up interviewing Norm about a planispheric astrolabe he literally designed and built, Hugh with his home-built 6" RC, and Phil from the radio astronomy crew about what they’re doing with the dish out at LMDSS
ran Messier Bingo, gave away prizes, pointed telescopes at the Sun, then spent the rest of the night imaging under stupidly good skies
and somewhere in between all that… just hung out with a bunch of legends I haven’t seen in ages
one night, way too much fun, zero regrets

Drove the world’s largest Solar System, Sun in Coonabarabran all the way to Pluto.
Jupiter is huge.
Uranus is a gas giant.
Passed cows too… pretty sure those were cowstaroids.
Moved my telescope to a new roll-off roof observatory at Starview Farm, Central Victoria, tested the setup under dark skies… then ran the whole thing remotely from my desk in Melbourne, over 300km away.
Future of astrophotography.
