Supporting #Afghan women is central to IMS’ work, using media as a tool to enable women in different areas of life and ensure that there is a platform for their stories to be heard.

This year, CPH:DOX presented two powerful documentaries highlighting Afghan women’s voices and their stories. The Secret Reading Club of Kabul won the NORDIC:DOX Award. Meanwhile, the IMS-supported #documentaryfilm, A Fox Under a Pink Moon, previously won the main prize at IDFA, was also screened at CPH:DOX.

Following the screenings, IMS hosted panel discussions across Denmark with the filmmakers and key stakeholders to increase the engagement between audiences and #documentary filmmakers.

Documentaries can do something special: they can make us more aware of the world, give room to voices we rarely hear and illustrate issues that often drown in the mainstream news stream. In societies where human rights are under pressure, documentaries can sometimes escape censorship and bring to light stories that are rarely told: about everyday life, power and social dynamics. These Afghan documentaries are examples of just that.
