Giordano Bruno, an italian monk studying astronomy around 1600 has, before Galileo, supported and demonstrated the heliocentrism of Copernic.
He as been tortured by cardinal Bellarmin for that, asking him to change his mind. Then he has been burn alive.
Cardinal Bellarmin as been beatified and caninised by church in 1928 !
