#archivemount for mounting almost any kind of archive or compressed file.

You can even modify contents, althought that is not so tested as just reading.

Great for inspecting large tarballs without having to uncompress them.

#archivemount is an archive filesystem.

archivemount is a tool that mounts an (optionally compressed) archive file as a filesystem using FUSE. The files in this virtual filesystem correspond to the files in the real archive, and can be altered transparently as if no compression or archive was there. The archive is saved once it is unmounted.
