6/4 I remember reading somewhere that some of the plan9 creators/developers realized that plan9 was not going to eclipse more popular OSes and instead tried to ensure some of the core cool ideas were available in other OSes, hence Plan9 in Userspace.
I guess that's why I'm wondering if, in a sense, #FUSE as a creator of VFSs is spiritually connected to plan9.
