Egyptian vessel - 17th Dynasty (late Second Intermediate Period, approx 1580 - 1550 BC)
This vessel, now located in the Cliffe Castle Museum, Bradford, UK, is a stunning example of Ancient Egyptian Blue Painted Ware. The blue pigment, created from calcium copper silicate, is known as Egyptian Blue and was used extensively from the 4th Dynasty right up to the Roman period, when it then fell out of fashion. This style of decoration often depicted floral designs and some animal motifs. This design here is thought to represent lotus leaves.
