Aaaaah hahaha turns out SteamOS' gamescope does exactly that. It hooks into Wayland and can apply a subset of ReShade shaders to whatever it's running on top of, which might just as well be the desktop, because why not, it's just another program, and it's your computer, you can do with it whatever you want.
You won't believe what I now will say, for the first time in 30 years of computer: This begins to look like the #YearOfTheLinuxDesktop.

Microslop, 2026: Hey look what we build our cloud services on.
Guys, stop talking about #yearofthelinuxdesktop
This is it. It's a done deal.
Linux has f***** won.
[Granted, the knowledge about it is not evenly distributed yet.]
Running LMDE, with the nVidia 550 drivers, the grub bootloader only boots to 1024x768 instead of the native resolution of my monitors. (desktop resolution is fine once X starts).
Randomly tried to solve this problem again this morning to no avail. Following the documentation to set grub's resolution has no effect.
This problem has almost no impact on my experience other than being aesthetically displeasing once or twice a month when I reboot.
