Hongos "Dedos de hombre muerto"

El Xylaria polymorpha es un hongo con un aspecto perturbador que crece en árboles heridos o troncos en descomposición. Su extraña forma y color cambian con la madurez, llegando a parecer dedos saliendo de la tierra.

The Devil reaching up from hell - this is how some cultures explained the mysterious growth of #mushrooms. Or is it their grotesque shape which inspired folklore?

#Lithuanian & #Baltic mythology imagined the fingers of #Velnias, God of the Underworld, as mushrooms growing to feed the poor. The lore may be inspired by #XylariaPolymorpha ("Dead Man's Fingers", that's the fungus in the illustration) or #ClathrusArcheri ("Devil's Fingers"), although both are inedible. But why should the Devil care?
