Bombastic Broadway Style Music

"Not squirt, not tinkle, Splash!"

Synchronized swimming choreography. On Broadway. I mean, I'm not into it for theater but I am ready for a comeback of swimming musical movies.

Charles aggressively playing the concertina at Oliver.

All of these people need to tell each other the truth.

Tie Die Guy is what we're calling the person who went up the stairs when everyone else was evacuating. Still could be Mabel even as she says it could be the mysterious fiancee. (Who I am not sure I believe in.)

I like how Oliver and Charles are trying to solve the mystery, except they're investigating things like real estate and mysterious fiancees. Meanwhile Mabel is encouraging them while also using them to solve the mystery only she knows about.

While I don't see Howard "Evelyn's Cat Dad" as a murderer, I can't say I wouldn't be sympathetic if Tim indeed shot the cat as threatened. But we don't know how Evelyn died.

Huh. I somehow didn't expect Teddy to still be here, but who would waste Nathan Lane?
Oh. Teddy is the Dimas Deli guy with the dips. And he financed Oliver's stuff. I assume he lost quite a bit on Splash!

EVELYN!

At least he has a reason for having a frozen cat in his freezer, I guess? Suspecting Tim Kono poisoned her is reason.

Do we have an autopsy report on Tim Kono? I know there's the whole blood thing but was he poisoned too? (Soap style: "stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated, and bludgeoned.")

"You know, there's A CAT in your freezer."
Vintage fucking Steve Martin, that whole bit.

"Splat!"
Oh, Oliver. You used your son's college fund. Now it makes sense.

He's just holding that cat leg.

Oscar's Dad still works here. So Oscar also has access to the building keys.

I guess you don't waste Sting either.

"End the podcast or I end you."
Yeah, you really should lock your door.
Winnie?! No time! Save Winnie!

Oliver, I do not think Sting is poisoning the animals in your building. Did love that scene, though.

This was a great episode. Framing everything through Oliver's ... not just pov, but life, was so much fun and so interesting. I'll be happy if there's more like this.

To recap: wtf, Mabel? Did she tell the truth about anything? Was she the person in the hoodie going up while Charles and Oliver were evacuating the building? We don't know where she is until she enters the bar and joins them.

Mabel. My dear hopefully not murderous Mabel. Why are you wearing that ring? I don't feel like I need to ask why she's drawing her dead friend.

Charles. Charles you actor. You liar of an actor. Giving Mabel Brazzo's story as your own. Gods I love these people. They are awful/wonderful.

"Now you sound like Patti Lupone."
I am here for the theater snark.

Oliver should lock his door.

"Tim Kono seems to have had a really sad quiet life."

Ooh. Mabel disappeared for ten years. Someone in jail, Tim can make it right, he knows what happened but didn't say anything.

Who is Oscar who is getting out of jail? I presume he blames Tim for being jailed. Is he the other Hardy Boy?

Oliver should probably take a vitamin, but I do understand his love for dips.

Oh, she knows what's from your show, Charles. She knows.

The cat! How did she die? I knew there was something up with the cat in the hallway.

Nobody liked Tim. I guess that makes sense.

The flashback was very cute. I like the animated bits and extras in this show. Oscar was indeed a Hardy Boy, and the one among them most likely to be punished if any of the 4 were caught. Even Mabel, poor as she was, had the connection of her aunt to protect her. Where's Zoe ten years later? Why was Oliver in jail?

"It was just reeking of your years on CBS."

Tim kept the Hardy Boys books.
Is that the same ring?

As I feared, Zoe is dead. Oliver was blamed. Tim saw someone else fighting with Zoe and that's what he never said.

Evelyn the cat was inside Tim's apartment after he died.

I don't know if I believe Charles.

Oh, god, is Oliver going to make them do trust exercisess?
OMG he did try!

Dead Tim Kono gives Lilly Kane vibes.
Why is she hanging out with a couple of old weirdos? Same reason she hung out with three young weirdos, DeadTim.

I joked in the first episode that Mabel was crawling through the vents but of course she must have Oliver's key.

Tim kept the drawing Mabel made the first day they met. He kept the Hardy Boys books. He stuffed the Hardy Boys books full of jewelry which I was assuming they stole while they were kids, but would he? Especially if he was broke?

Only Murders in the Building S01E01 True Crime

I don't know them yet, but maybe they should have left her behind. Because of the corpse.

The wave of nostalgia and affection I had seeing Steve Martin. Obviously I need to watch more of what he's in.

Charles played Brazzos, a TV (or movie) detective. Charles organizes his refrigerator to what I would call an exceptional degree.

Mabel has great style. She recognizes crime Charles doesn't. She might worry some, but who hasn't had that soothing bedtime thought before? Especially knitters.

Oliver is in theater. Directing. He also has great style. I would move in to his apartment in a heartbeat.

The intro is adorable.

I assume we're supposed to pay attention to Tim Kono and his kitchen sized trash bag.

Why was there a cat just hanging about in the hallway?

Excellent use of Tina Fey.

Who's going up when they're all evacuating?

"Are you not Scott Bakula?"
"I am not."
I snorted. It was a lengthy and undignified snort.

That was not what I expected to be in Bo's mouth.

Aw, look at these weirdos and nerds.

9th floor.
Just to take a peek.
And they should avoid the cops.
Yeah, I love them.

Obviously by rules of TV that's Tim Kono's floor, where the cat was. And there he is. Was.

Cranky and competent lady cop is clearly their nemesis.

That's what I was thinking! A chute on every floor!
What thought did Oliver have if he didn't have the garbage bag thought?

Those goofs are talking acting techniques while Mabel's hunting through trash. Trial suicide notes?

Worth it. That was an insulting audition. Solving crimes is way more fun.

How does Mabel afford to live there and why does it look like she's knocking out walls without permission? Okay, she had permission, just possibly not training.

The missing package was an engagement ring. Or at least an expensive ring.

Oh. That bit with Oliver on the stairs like the play. Look at them all, bouncing back.

"Like a Ken Burns documentary on the history of boredom."

Lucy? Who is Lucy, Charles?

Tim Kono was one of Mabel's Hardy Boys!

This is going to set off my nerdiness and I'm going to be forced to calculate the time differential if no one else does it.

This is so Vince Gilligan already. Gorgeous long shot of a vehicle driving past all the satellite dishes. This group of very normal nerds. Great sweater on the first guy.

Same data every 78 seconds from 600 light years away.
Not binary, not quaternary, and Sweater Nerd knows what it is.

I love the room filling with more and more scientists, all so excited about this.

71D 13H 20M 58S

It's been a year-ish, and now we're here and people in Spring-colored scrubs are doing stuff with petri dishes. And also chunky rats.

Rhea!
Aw, cute flippy hair. Love the suit. It's giving me a late 80s early 90s vibe, but with better boots.

Romantasy writer? Winds of Wycaro about a Pirate Queen.
Oh, good, she's got the fans without boundaries. Put the sword away, dude.

Is there weed or booze in the car? I would need weed and booze in the car after that.
That's a big handhold between Carol and Helen. I assume they'll be teasing this as if it isn't obvious.

29D 23H 49M 55S

Dr. Jenn.
Dr. D. (Deshpande) Hey, Karan Soni! Great to see him.

Animal experiments. was the code DNA? How bad is this plan they're engaging in? Are they doing DNA experiments based on a message that might be from aliens?

Why. Why take your gloves off. You are asking to be bit by an alien-rat hybrid.Yep, you got bit. Now you're an alien-human-rat hybrid. and the rat is loose.

Damn, that was fast. Dr. Jenn, we hardly knew you. If you live, you don't get to be a scientist anymore, I bet. You'll be human test subject number one..

Oh, I'm not sure that's Jenn anymore.

Has anyone read The Many by Sylvain Neuvel? I wonder where we're going with this. Great book, btw. Out next year, I read an ARC I've not reviewed yet.
http://neuvel.net/books/the-many/

Dr. Jenn is loose. And I'm pretty sure she's going to knaw on you, Mel. Or just kiss you. That's better than knawing.

Where's Dr. D. She had to have infected him already. Yep, he's going to kiss the janitor.

More things with petri dishes. No pretty scrubs. Lots of infected. Are they linked. That's my question, and based on their movements together I think so.

Oh, gross, she's licking the donuts. I am not okay with that deliberate donut licking.

00D 03H 06M 33S

That went fast. I wasn't sure we'd make it through the countdown in episode 1.

It doesn't look like anyone knows about weirdo aliens taking over.

Okay, I love this. Helen rearranging the book display, putting Diana Gabaldon on the bottom and Carol's book on the top. These two are a menace.

I see. There's a reason why Carol isn't driving.

I don't love that she hates what she writes. I don't love the implied judgment of romantasy. And I don't love the fan mocking.

That does seem weird. Are those planes crashing?

The Jezebel and the trafficker of filth.
Really, Hugh? You're impressed by Lena?
Somebody's feeling powerful today. Say Gabi does give you what you want. How would that work while you're in FBI custody?

Oh, Jamie. It's trauma, baby, and it's okay. I'm so sorry.
Margaret sounds like me, so determined to ensure Jamie knows he did not do anything wrong.

So. Did Sadie know that Diane was pregnant and that Tom was the biological father?
What the hell, Sadie, what were you trying to make her drink?
Sadie wants a normal baby someday. Fucking ableist bitch.

(As usual, I play where have I seen this actor before. Diane's actor was Rebecca on Never Have I Ever.)

"It's time for all the adults in your life to put your needs first."
Nicely done, Margaret.

Margaret's blouse is very pretty.
I'd wondered who that boy was standing near Margaret. It's Nicholas!
No, baby. You also do not have to apologize for Carrie. She hurt you, too.

It's nice you're there and you say "it's over" to Margaret, but you didn't endure what she did. Not how she did. Not alone.

Dhan, that is clever. The one way to get Hugh to tell them where Lena is, to pretend she hurt Gabi.

#Found #WriteAndWatch

If there were a season 3, Hugh Evans government asset would have been great TV.

Excuse you, Trent, you are suddenly flexible with your morals.

Jinny had a client. A woman named Lena.
Oh that evil bitch. She's going after people from Gabi's past.
I want to know more about Lena's childhood and life.

Jamie, no. Carrie knows you were setting her up, she won't trust you. She won't let you in again. It's dangerous.
See, he knows that. He knows that the rest of his family could be in danger. Margaret, you can't know your ex and daughters are not in danger. Tell them.

Those were some parallels. Who took the tab from his missing person flyer.

Gabi is not feeling, Lacey. She is deliberately not feeling.

I can't blame Ren. I can guess how often he and Diane are treated poorly. (We live in an ableist society.)
"That guy is making people uncomfortable."

Ew, Trent, that's gross. "Ren and I are going to join forces?" Asshole, you're a fucking cop, treat this like every other missing persons case.

Lena's creeping me out with this detailed stuff. What the hell is wrong with this family. It's amazing Christian wasn't a freak.

There are many reasons to take an anti-nausea medication that aren't pregnancy. That's quite a leap they made.

What is up with the friends? Is it just about Diane's parents not wanting her with Ren? No.

Diane was a whistleblower.
Diane came to the police wanting advice for a friend who failed the exam. Last night. Was that before or after she was seen at the bus station? We're sort of ditching the plot in favor of showing the ableism.

I don't know about a restaurant named Pit and Pear. Pear I like, but pit? What are they serving?

Dhan's FBI BFF is the guy handling Hugh Evans?
Nah, you are not just the messenger. We can tell because you're trying to manipulate Dhan. What a dick.

Do you two realize that your daughter is a human being? It sure doesn't sound like it. It sounds like you consider her some sort of doll you get to manage.

Ren is infertile? So Diane's parents say.
And the parent is Tom. What the fuck? Is this some sort of sperm thing? It is.
Doctor confirmed the pregnancy.

Dude, why are you apologizing to Diane's parents? They aren't involved in this. They don't control Diane.

I love that Gabi knows how to kick down a door.
Diane's coworker left a note that says 'I'm sorry I hurt you, Diane,' and she overdosed.
She's sorry because she was stealing and she thought Diane was too stupid to know. She was a dick to Diane, then other people were a dick to her because they also could not let a disabled person be and experience normal things.

Huh. That was a rapid switch, Diane's family suddenly being a "family" with Ren.

I knew those love sweaters would come back.
Tom is weird, but did he really try to get rid of his friend since childhood?

Austin thinks FGD is dead but paid the debt anyway? Why was this such a mystery to everyone? Why wouldn't mom tell the loan shark it was her paying? I assume she paid so she wouldn't get killed, so it would make sense to tell the loan shark it's her.

We are solving this case for Jamie and that's it.

You two need to have this conversation in therapy. Margaret, I know you understand feelings. Please understand yours enough to understand Jamie's because his are the feelings of a confused and frightened seven year old.

Ouch, Trent.
No, Gabi, Lena taking over someone's identity and dating Trent is not on you.

His current location is need to know. And yet he was taken in the night? That's odd.

Ah. FGD texted his wife. She knew he wasn't dead.

"Ladybug and Cricket need your help."
Paging the not so dead dad.

Boss guy had a great plan for a while, blaming his debts on FGD.

That hospital has a long response to emergency beeping. I don't want to end up there.
Girl. Seriously. You wash your hands off before you walk into that room to tell these people their father is dead. What the hell?

Bitch. Making him choose.
I don't believe he's actually choosing, though.
And he's not.
That flashback showed how Jamie has learned to manipulate. Not surprising from someone who has endured so much trauma.

What is this weirdness? Has Hugh been recruited by the US government to fight crime or something?

#Found #WriteAndWatch

What is that? Where is Hugh?

Ah, yes, the actual Heather Tollin Rogers. And this all began 2 years ago.

Margaret lighting up when she realizes she can call "her son" and that he was there all night.

Poor Jamie. This kid's had so much heartbreak.
That evil bitch. To take a baby and lie to him like that. And on his birthday.

Carrie's biological son. Nicholas. What are you implying, Trent?
WAIT WHAT. Nicholas didn't die? He was taken by CPS?

I'm still mad this show as cancelled. Jamie is drawn to this and he's good at it, like Gabi. There were good shows in our future.

So her brother needs a kidney transplant, she already gave hers, they need to find presumed-dead Dad.
Ooh, this is good. Gabi is primed to see Alison as someone wanting to see her dead father.

Nah, Gabi, you and Margaret make irresponsible promises all the time to your clients. You're taking this personally. (As is Jamie, but I believe he's right.)

Oh, fuck this still smiling, still fighting bullshit. The guy's kidney is failing. He's been down this road before. If he's frowning he has a right to be.

There we go. Financial Guy Dad was in debt. He did fake his death. Or, rather, took advantage of a tragedy to not correct assumptions he wasn't dead.

Christian was murdered. Fits. Lena needs to be the Best Sibling.
Yes, you all treated Christian like shit.

Gabi. Even you kidnapping Sir began with him kidnapping you. You can't bear all this, it's not yours.

Someone's been paying the loan shark in cash ever since Financial Guy Dad "died." Until now. Why stop now with so little less to pay (comparatively)?

Shut up, Jamie. Perhaps being raised by a kidnapper didn't allow you to develop social skills, but you're getting intrusive.
Oh, sweetie, Carrie would hurt you in a second if she believed you weren't in her thrall.
All that aside, I do enjoy how Jamie stirs up emotional shit because he recognizes stuff and then blurts it out like it's a common subject.

Okay. Boss guy lied about Financial Guy Dad saving his life because he'd fired FGD two days before and FGD wasn't even there.

Their mother was paying off their father's debt until she died two years ago. And then Austin took over. But he hasn't had a job because he's been hospitalized so often and they aren't rich, so what's up? And why didn't they tell Alison anything?

Very sneaky, Jamie. Waiting until the awkward twosome are awkwarding at each other to sneak out. But why not tell them you're going to see Trent?
Oh, sweetie. What a world this kid has had to live in? He's afraid his kidnapper mother might be killed.
No, sweetie, it's okay. You do not have to explain that. You were a baby, you knew nothing only what you were told, and you loved. It's okay.

Lena Matthews from Auckland.
She was questioned 8 weeks ago after Hugh kidnapped Lacey.

There you all go. Christian didn't shoot Heather. Heather did it herself with the gun she took from Trent's house.

Oh. Hey, Trent. Your girlfriend is, you know, not great. Really, Trent? This is about your personal life and your personal feelings? And you say that to Gabi?

My dude, why do you think Heather is going to admit this to you? Like she's just going to tank their plan and admit crimes to you out of love or something?

Oh, shit, Margaret. And you just invited Carrie over to your house. Girl, what are you going to do?

Gabi, why do you think Hugh will tell you anything?

Margaret just putting the train on the table. I am loving this. Based on that and Margaret's unfinished business I wouldn't drink that tea if I were Carrie.

Hugh's bright smile when Gabi walked in. She's never going to love you, Hugh.
Ethan as referee is excellent.
So excellent that Gabi's having him leave so she can be hurt but get the information she needs.

That's an awkward power outage at the jail.
And it is a very bad power outage for Zeke.

Prison power outage turned into a riot. Hugh will love this. And yes, he does, by taking Gabi. Except did he just put her inside a safe room?
These two--Shanola Hampton and MPG--are devouring this scene.

Margaret is scary. Shall we play a game?
"I have plans for you."
Well, fuck. Carrie is scarier.

Yeah, Hugh, this is a terrible idea. You two are marching straight into a riot.

Carrie told herself Margaret was ungrateful but really she couldn't deal with her own guilt.

Poor Jamie. Except, sweetie, one of your moms just bloodied the other and did actually kidnap you. Choose a side, honey. You're grown now, you need to be rational about the assault.

All these scenes in the jail cell are fantastic.

Carrie is a fucking monster.

Oh, Jamie. And Carrie just left him.

Heather Tollin the lawyer is not the Heather Tollin they know. So, yeah, Lena. So where is the real Heather Tollin and is she even alive?

Lacey gets the best jackets and blazers.

I really want to know what Margaret's plans for Carrie were.

Zeke! Harsh, my dude. You absolutely could have worded that differently and still gotten across the point that you weren't comfortable discussing what happened.

It's the real Heather Tollin!

Gabi's suit!

Everything is a lesson with Hugh. And a way to get to Gabrielle.

Why do you all keep calling Hugh "Sir"? None of you have to feed into his delusions like that. He has no authority, he deserves no respect.

Monty is terrifying me, the way he's waving that gun around. Everywhere, even toward his own head. He's not paying attention.

Everything with Margaret and her husband is heartbreaking.

There's a lot here. Monty's done a lot, but there are also a lot of doubts. He's cast as the villain but I'm not fully seeing it.

They keep talking about the scalding water and how it was an accident but nobody explains what the accident was. I don't think the accident was Monty; I think it was Dalia and he covered.

Something happened 3 months ago that caused Dalia to leave her parents with no word.

Oh, good, Trent and Dhan are trained for this.
Jamie, using the right words: "What would Gabi do" and "my mom says."

Marlon is right in the middle of this, Lacey is right. He was the go-between for everything. Clever again, Jamie, that maybe Marlon was holding Dalia's running money.

This is big. Dhan asking Jamie to come with him, and Margaret being okay with it.

Jamie studies everyone. He and Margaret and their trauma created hypervigilance.

Trent goes to Hugh to find out how to break in to M&A.

This is a lot, to ask Gabi to be that vulnerable with the person holding her hostage.

AH HAH. It was an accident. It was Dalia's accident. She wandered off while water was boiling on the stove--the show parallel was Margaret burning the dinner while depressed.

Dalia left her family on purpose setting a boundary that they had to get on board with her reuniting with Monty.
Lacey's sure it's not Dalia's parents.

Trent!

Dalia confronted the lying child therapist 3 months ago and worries Dalia was going to do something drastic.
Margaret says the therapist isn't lying.
Dalia's parents were behind that.

If Dalia checked into some sort of rehab then where the hell is Jalen?
OMG, there she is, just sittng there curled up comfy. Where is Jalen, woman?!

Dalia it is super fucking creepy that you do not say where Jalen is. Where did you hide him?
Norma the friend had him.

Fuck that shit. Take this gift of Gabi not pressing charges and be with your family.

Margaret says Heather is Hugh's sister Lena.
I knew she was Hugh's accomplice. Someone needs to find me Annie, though. Before this season ends.

"The clouds will part eventually."
