I know that I really shouldn't say anything about this one.
When I was an undergraduate taking analytical chemistry, our library had a copy of the multivolume "Sadler Spectra" which you could use to compare the IR spectrum of compounds that you were trying to identify or synthesize.
Being ignorant of the rules, I removed one of the books from the shelf, placed it on a table, and began comparing my lab results to one of the spectra.
A librarian came over and ejected me from the library, informing me that I wasn't allowed to use that book. The logic was that if they allowed the book to be used, it would eventually wear out and need to be replaced.
This led me to realize that the ideal library, from a librarians' perspective is one where all the books are in order on the shelves and there is zero circulation.
