#WisConline 2025 Call for Artists

Since the con is online-only this year, we won't be setting up a physical room or selling artists' work directly (or charging commission fees). However, we would still love to see and show the artwork of the #WisCon community!

The premier conference in String theory was held online last week and attendance went from 400 to 2,000 people.

Lots of people who couldn't attend because of family, travel, and budget came to this year's conference, which tracks what we saw with #WisCONline this past May.

Shaping the Future of Scientific Conferences | Asymptotia

This year's big annual flagship conference in String theory, Strings 2020, ended two days ago. It was a massive success, and it was held entirely online. There were more than 2000 registered participants from all around the world, with sessions where a large portion of that number were engaged simultaneously! There were excellent talks (selected by the programme committee) and many illuminating discussions. Due to the pandemic, the conference was originally going to be cancelled (or at least postponed to much later in the year), but organizer Jeff Murugan announced at relatively short notice that they were instead going to attempt to do it online on the original dates, and it is wonderful that so many people around the world engaged, instead of just shrinking away into the Covid-19 gloom. The other major component of the success is what I want to discuss here. It was the use, sometimes in concert, of tools such as Zoom [...] Click to continue reading this post →

at #WisCONline I'm in the chat talking with folks about possible careers, nerd-specific linguistics research, the importance of ephemeral events WITHIN online gatherings https://thewebivore.com/the-art-of-gathering-remotely/ , Animal Crossing, and how nice it is to "see" each other.
