Leafy Hideaway

A small bird with soft yellow‑green plumage perches quietly among the leaves, its body half‑turned so the intricate patterns on its wings and back catch the light. The bright white ring around its eye stands out like a tiny halo, giving the bird an alert, almost inquisitive expression. Each feather is crisp and defined, from the subtle greens along its back to the pale underparts that glow against the surrounding foliage.

It’s striking how naturally this white‑eyed vireo (Vireo griseus) disappears into its setting. The colors of its plumage echo the leaves around it so closely that the bird seems woven into the branches themselves, a small, watchful presence hiding in plain sight.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

Lemon in the Thicke

There's a quiet thrill in photographing a bird species for the first time. This one—a white-eyed vireo (Vireo griseus)—landed right where curiosity meets luck.

White-Eyed Watcher

I took these photos a few years ago in Georgia, but only just got around to really looking at them. The bird in the image appears to be a white-eyed vireo (Vireo griseus)—at least, that’s my best guess. I’m fairly sure I was shooting with a Canon 90D paired with a SIGMA 150–600mm lens back then.

Funny enough, just yesterday I received a Canon R5 and the RF 200–800mm lens, though I haven’t properly put them to work yet. This morning, while walking with Charlie, I brought along my old Canon 6D instead. That R5 setup is just too long—and a bit too unwieldy—for a dog walk.

Caught Something.

I was trying to figure out exactly what this white-eyed vireo () has it its beak. But the photo is cropped way too far. Besides when I took the photo my lens had fogged up from going from my air-conditioned house to high humidity. All I can make out is that it has something.

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Fierce White Eyes

There were dozens of birds in my backyard this morning as Charlie and I sat out in the shade and watched. I think I'll move my chair a bit closer tomorrow. I watch them fly in from all directions. I wonder if my yard might seem like a vortex pulling in birds to somebody paying attention from outside. This white eyed vireo (Vireo griseus) was hopping around in our crepe myrtle trees this morning. I see one of these once in a while. I've been hoping to see a red eyed vireo, they are around. I cropped it in a bit too far because I wanted a good look at the eyes.

Blue feet?

This is a white eyed vireo (Vireo griseus). Like many other birds, he came to the crepe myrtles along my fence. Perhaps he was looking for spiders or some other insects or, maybe he was just curious about why so many birds gathered there.

White eyed and yellow tailed.

This white eyed vireo (Vireo griseus) visited a couple of weeks ago.

"White-eyed Vireos eat caterpillars, flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, leafhoppers, lacewings, and spiders. They forage in a rather deliberate manner, slowly hopping along and looking around before grabbing something to eat. They swallow smaller items on the spot, but pin down larger prey with their foot before eating it. During the nonbreeding season, they also eat fruit from sumac, dogwood, poison ivy, pokeweed, and wax myrtle, as well as tropical fruits from Bursera trees." - allaboutbirds.org
