@strangefour @cptbutton I felt the lead feature started strong, I quite liked that part and hoped we were in for a fun ride. Then it just got so. dull. and turned into a police procedural and _wow_ did I stop caring, until they killed arguably the two best characters in the film, and then I was like "well THAT'S great we'd better get a good payoff"

and wow did we not get a good payoff xD

(I'm sorry but the singer/prostitute to my mind showed more defined individual _character_ than anyone in the film, with a lot of credit to the actress regardless of what you might think of her accent. She and Elsa Lanchester delivered the best performances regardless of what you think of their characters IMO)

This being the director's first movie almost makes sense why it's a sloppy mess.
His second movie was a vampire flick starring David Carradine and Bruce Campbell. Well shit we're gonna end up seeing that someday.

This is a little prior to Tails from the Crypt..
... anyone get the sense someone caught wind of the development of that and tried to jump the gun with their own project?

Because these felt like some sub-Tails From the Crypt scripts that were bodged together artlessly.

@moira @cptbutton Yeah... but hmm. The main feature was dull, but I kinda got invested in the middle. And there's an exciting action scene in the climax... until it shits the bed with the very end of the mystery.
But like that was a by the numbers expected Monsterdon failure. Waxworks was trying to make me like a piece of shit rich kid.

Now technically we have seen way worse movies on the Monsterdon double feature. Like real bad piles of junk. Waxworks is way more competently made than some. But somehow this thing pissed me off a heck of alot more that arguably worse movies.
Possibly because I haven't seen this whole movie before, but I swear I caught chunks of it on tv. And somehow it is less than the sum of it's clips.
Except David Warner. That man was a patron saint of actors as villains in movies.

Yeah a little bit. David Warner was trying his best to save this movie. Didn't work, but he was great.

Well, that was a weak-sauce tacked-on pointless "the monster's not really dead!" ending.

About right for a movie that was so deliberately derivative.

I've seen worse movies, but it really needed to pick a lane between "monster vignette anthology" and "Fright Night pastiche". And a tone.

The fuck is this ending song choice? Writer/director your movie is bad and you should feel bad.
Waxwork: 1/5 stars
David Warner: 5/5 Davids Warner

Oh that fire superimposed over the window was really bad. Like super bad.
But the miniature in the next cut looks fine. Again this movie has good and bad special effects right next to each other.
