Mild travel-anxiety humour from 1870, packing #luggage with the whole family trying to close the trunk while the driver awaits.

Scanned this in colour and used the mono mixer in #GIMP to cope with foxing (browning) of the paper - which was blue.

An #engraving #duotone in black and turquoise, a couple in #victorianCostumes are #skating on a pond.

Although #GIMP does not have a duotone mode, RGB in 16 bits per channel seemed to work pretty well. The monitor is calibrated, and the colours don’t look too far off, allowing for acidifying paper and some fading.

Karl Gampenrieder was known for his accurate portraits of society women; he went onto paint a portrait of Princess Elvira of Bavaria (no, not that Elvira), garnering some fame at the time.

I think the fellow in the picture is quite smitten. Either that or his moustache is about to start spinning & he’ll take off.
