X/Twitter, on Monday became the first online platform to be fined under Australia’s Online Safety Act, receiving a $610,500 penalty after failing to answer questions about how it was tackling child sexual abuse material.

Why are people still on that platform?

Australia fined X $610,500. But will Elon Musk’s company pay up?

‘There are three key drivers to get companies to change their behaviour: reputation, regulation and revenue,’ the e-safety commissioner says

The Guardian

@Eve He's counting on people thinking, "what's a dollar?", then getting so hooked (or dependent) on the platform, he'll be able to just hike the prices at will, with or without warning.

And he may be right for a small percentage of users, but as he's also killed the platform's utility for most people, it won't ever be enough to matter as profit.

Then again, the clear aim by whoever pulls his strings is the destruction of twitter, and that's already done.

Many people who are remaining on twitter still get most of their news from there; the fact that the coordinated campaigns of misinformation now go unchecked is not just eroding trust in news media, it will likely result in real world harm and violence, as it stokes Islamophobia, antisemitism, and general hatred of "the other".

What was Elon Musk’s strategy for Twitter? A fired Trump White House staffer offers a major clue

This is the aspect of #TwitterDemise that hurts the most: it killed the networks that the most marginalized people relied on for survival--the crowdfunding, the mutual aid, the community organizing.

And this was not an unforeseen side effect, it was part of what they were looking for when destroying twitter, because profit is their blood, but cruelty is the point, always.
