With everything else going on these past weeks, it’s quite possible some may have missed the BBC World Service “In the Studio” report on Tehran-formed Black Metal infidels TRIVAX.
Reporter Sahar Zand deftly places the band’s emergence on the international stage in context with the Iranian “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement. A people tyrannised by decades of religious subjugation, protesting against the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini and many others.
Recalling authoritarian adversity faced in both Iran and Syria before relocating to the UK, members Shayan and Sully intersperse the usual interview answers with troubling tales of personal oppression. A reminder that freedoms taken for granted are anything but universal, and empowerment is a duty of all artists who can speak.
Zand follows the band to Helgi’s in London, where elements of their incendiary ‘Against all Opposition’ video were filmed. We are also taken to the Cart and Horses gig where the band evoked their visceral Eastern Death Magick in support of DIOCLETIAN.
It was a great honour to enable that tour, despite the setbacks, and I absolutely stand by the band’s right to express their truth in word and deed. Freedom is the highest of ideals and will always win, but the fight is seldom straightforward.
It is rare that our little subculture is treated fairly by mainstream media. Although the BBC Sounds site requires registration, it’s well worth logging in to listen.

Released mere hours before missiles took flight, it presents a scathing critique of the Iranian regime. [...]
The dust has settled on the English leg of the DIOCLETIAN tour. Five dates of utter devastation across the country. Filling venues to capacity almost every night, with those who missed out eager for more. Ending the tour with the debut UK performance of ABRAXXUM was an inspired conclusion, but each and every show delivered an unyielding Antipodean assault.
There were a handful who did not want this tour to proceed. Fabricating “concerns” with the aid of AI and anonymous remailers. “Facts” that fell apart upon the slightest scrutiny. Clandestine collusion and censorious reporting of social media posts.
None of these allegations were ever made directly, where dialogue could have demonstrated credence to their credibility. No will to communicate beyond copy-paste. Just pitiful, and ultimately futile, attempts to silence.
For this I am grateful for the venues and promoters who stood their ground when faced with such hearsay. Those who raised their business-bound concerns and listened to our counterpoint, making informed decisions once all arguments were aired. The audience also made themselves heard, sick of such slacktivism and collectively stating their case. This succession of sold-out shows offers far more substance than the shallow spite of the saboteur.
Thanks also to TRIVAX, whose members have faced genuine oppression in their homelands, and in turn deliver the greatest exultation of Freedom with every performance. It was a privilege to perceive their Persian perspective, and reflect upon the geopolitics that empower their incendiary stance.
War Metal has a reputation for expressing the “supreme authority” of violence, yet these shows occurred against a backdrop of actual conflict. Increased tensions across the global stage threaten to drag all into armageddon, and such music must present cathartic soundtrack to these uncertain times.
Without doubt, the tour was a tremendous success, despite totalitarian efforts to shut it down. Future shows are planned, if not announced already, and HeathenStorm Productions thrive in tireless tenacity. Without backing down. Without compromise. Without surrender.

Lydda, Palestine. Year 303 in the Common Era. The Roman Emperor, emboldened by a will to restore the glory of old, has declared an edict to persecute and punish the encroaching Christian faith. A young Cappadocian tribune, a believer, refuses to comply and speaks out against the decree. For his defiance, this once-trusted soldier is brutally tortured, mutilated, and ultimately decapitated. His remains are interred at Lydda, the homeland of his mother, and a church built in his honour.
That Emperor, of course, was Diocletian. And through his martyrdom, the tribune became known to the world as Saint George.
Or so the story goes…

Released mere hours before missiles took flight, it presents a scathing critique of the Iranian regime. Relentlessly intercutting a timeline of religious and state suppression with band footage. Clips from their early years playing ‘forbidden music’ in Tehran, to the freedom of expression they now experience in the West.
Beyond the band, this video is a paean to protest. A duty to speak for those who cannot, against the will to silence demanded by all oppressors. Honouring the countless souls dead, detained or otherwise ‘disappeared’ by the regime’s self-imposed morality police.
This video is not an easy watch, hence placed behind a warning click, but it is very much a worthy one.
