I created the legislative risk map specifically to help answer that question. Now more than ever, it is a question that needs answering for so many transgender people facing forced medical detransition, arrests for using the bathroom, bans on the use of our names, pronouns, and identification documents, and many other curtailments of our rights to exist in public life.

Discrimination cloaked under the guise of religion is still discrimination. Can you explain the logic of a child being placed into a home where they are told they are wrong, that their identity is wrong, that they don’t belong, that they made a mistake with who they are?

The shooter was identified as a Republican supporting Christian nationalist who used anti-LGBTQ+ slurs and hate speech online and promoted the Leave Our Kids Alone movement by name. After news of the horrific murder went viral— right-wing school board candidates Jordan Henry and Jonathan Zachreson, two local leaders of the Leave Our Kids Alone movement, joined an online far-right disinformation campaign and pushed an AI-generated fake blog post falsely claiming that the victim of the Lake Arrowhead shooting had been killed by her brother... These are the actions of fascist provocateurs and disinformation agents who wish to tear down the existence of the LGBTQ+ community using violence and lies.

Yet for all the criticism it unleashed, or precisely because of that very criticism, conservative groups seized upon Paul’s piece to pursue anti-trans legal maneuvers. In Idaho, the Alliance Defending Freedom, the powerful conservative legal group known for its critical role behind the strategy that overturned Roe v. Wade, specifically cited Paul’s Feb. 4 column as evidence of the “ostracism, pain, and lifelong regret” young people experience after receiving gender-affirming health care.

This updated map delineates the legislative risks concerning laws aimed at transgender adults in the United States. States like Florida have eliminated 80% of all trans adult care, adults can be thrown in jail for using the bathroom of their gender identity, and trans people with correct gender markers on their drivers licenses can be charged with fraud. Multiple states have passed laws ending all legal recognition for trans people. As such, starting this year, adult risk levels for trans people will be tracked on its own map.
