The head of the sledgehammer was starting to wobble, it felt unstable. I was worried the handle was cracked under the head and needed to be replaced, hoping that I could just use the flat side of a claw-hammer to smack the metal inserts down for a tighter fit. So, I consulted with my 82 year old wood stove buddy. The prognosis was a relief. The handle wasn't cracked, it was the wood drying out that made the tool feel weak, and dangerous. A 4.5kg hung of metal flying and bouncing around can't be good.. All I had to do was soak the hammer in water for a while and it feels as solid as new again. The next day I asked how he knew, if he had seen craftsmen/trades workers 職人 do it.. He told me it's a general thing, a lot of the crafts people soak their tools in water before use, the wall-spackler guys 左官屋さん....
