Just finished Octavia Butler's #TheParableOfTheSower after a 2+ month wait from my public library.
The wait was worth it. Jeez, how could she have predicted today's America in 1993?

After reading the news for the last couple of days, specially about the culling and striping of institutions, I remind myself that the events of #TheParableOfTheSower started a few months ago, and now I understand the government, the wars, the police, everything in it.
Man, how much prescience did Octavia Butler had?

WE HAD A FIRE TODAY.
As a 50 year old with a 13 year old daughter living in Octavia Butler’s neighborhood of Altadena, CA, it was eerie when I re-read The Parable of the Sower last summer. Today following the devastating Eaton Fire, the opening of chapter four just doubles down on the dystopia in which we’re living.Today is the chronological first diary entry in Octavia Butler's 1993 book The Parable of the Sower. It's particularly poignant for me as parallels in the book mirror portions of my life. I've just turned 50, my daughter is 13, I live in Altadena, CA, near the neighborhood where Octavia Butler grew up and in

It takes a serious amount of shamelessness to flaunt one's hideous wealth in one of the most unequal countries in the world. Though it is the second largest food producer after China, India is home to a quarter of the world’s underfed, with approximately 190 million hungry people. The poorest Indian states have infant mortality rates that supersede sub-Saharan Africa, according to Oxfam, and every second, about two Indians are pushed into poverty because of rising healthcare costs.
Climate change comes for the wealthy too: “My home has three air conditioners, but frequent power outages have left me helpless,” said Singh

#TheParableOfTheSower: Despite Silicon Valley’s talk of techno-optimism and abundance, many tech plutocrats are plagued by a “creeping sense of paranoia” about the future, said Slobodian in an interview. Fearing the possibility of civilizational collapse—or driven by “greed, megalomania and the desire to have a zero percent tax rate”—some tech elites seek a retreat into bespoke fortress societies.
