Just updated my production diary for my film THE ORIGINAL COPY. We're nailing down the design of our hero prop that will be prominently featured in the film. In this post I introduce our product designer and prop builders, and offer a peek at some kitchen-counter R&D happening behind the scenes of our science fiction film.

How big is a fabricator?
We're honing in on a final design for the hero prop for THE ORIGINAL COPY. A shout-out is in order, to product designer Simon Fischer who created the concepts we're working with. Simon hails from Krakow, and you should check out his Instagram. To complete the project, I'm now working with a prop designer and builder Fabio Meschini, who's based in Rome. Yes, we have an international team: thanks, internet. Fabio is making refinements to the design, including figuring out what's inside when you op

Designing the hero
This entire film revolves around a piece of technology that doesn't exist: a science-fictional piece of consumer electronics, the FABRICATOR. The first step to creating this crucial prop, central to the film, was to come up with a design. So for the past few months I've been pretending to be an industrial designer, cranking out sketches and drawings... but never nailing it. After months of trying to DIY the thing, I resorted to asking an actual product designer. Voila -- based on my brief he's c

This is how it starts
A belated post on we how had a good day, one night. November 8, 2023. That was the night the Museum of Sonoma County generously opened its doors after hours for us to shoot our crucial "heist" scene. Pictured here are our two Louvre security guards, played by none other than museum Executive Director Jeff Nathanson (center) and stalwart friend and actor Pete Stringfellow (right). The director (that's me) is on the left. Not pictured are additional stalwart friends, Chris and Sandy Yaryan (who pl

#TheOriginalCopy made it as far as the 2nd Round in the Austin Film Festival competition (what other contests call "quarterfinals.") They actually call you up to inform you, which is quite a nice call to get. First dent this one has made, contest-wise.

Signs of life
With the storyboard complete, it's onto creating an animatic. Basically, creating a very rough first draft of the film, by importing the storyboard images into Final Cut and adding motion and audio. The result is crude, but it's still a really effective tool for determining if scenes will play the way I imagined.
