Designing the hero
This entire film revolves around a piece of technology that doesn't exist: a science-fictional piece of consumer electronics, the FABRICATOR. The first step to creating this crucial prop, central to the film, was to come up with a design. A belated post on we how had a good day, one night. November 8, 2023. That was the night the Museum of Sonoma County generously opened its doors after hours for us to shoot our crucial "heist" scene. #TheOriginalCopy made it as far as the 2nd Round in the Austin Film Festival competition (what other contests call "quarterfinals.") They actually call you up to inform you, which is quite a nice call to get. First dent this one has made, contest-wise.

Signs of life
With the storyboard complete, it's onto creating an animatic. Basically, creating a very rough first draft of the film, by importing the storyboard images into Final Cut and adding motion and audio. The result is crude, but it's still a really effective tool for determining if scenes will play the way I imagined.
