Heads Up, Skywatchers!

The Leonid meteor shower peaks early Monday morning—and there’s no moonlight to spoil the view. Grab a warm coat, kick back in a lawn chair, and keep your eyes on the sky. You could catch up to 12 meteors an hour.

And don’t forget: the Taurids are still hanging around. They’re few and far between, but every now and then… BOOM—a brilliant fireball. More details here: https://www.astronomy.com/observing/the-leonid-meteor-shower-peaks-sunday-night/

Managed to catch a shooting star last night! #shootingstar #meteor #taurids #atronomy #astrophotography

Monitoring 6m and 2m - hearing the odd ping... Might have to load up some software.

IN THE SKY THIS WEEK: The absence of the Moon helps the Taurids and those 1-5 an hour slow moving pea sized particles can produce some very bright fireball meteors. Venus sets not long after sunset, the west side of the Great Square points down almost to 1st-magnitude Saturn, Mars has moved a little out of line with Pollux and Castor, and Jupiter has some action on 11/8 as Io's shadow crosses the planet's face - and set the clocks back this weekend! https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/observing-news/this-weeks-sky-at-a-glance-november-1-10/

Friend of WAS Michael Zuraw shared his lone Taurid through a break in the clouds last night.

Here come the Halloween Fireballs! With no Moon the Taurids could light up Halloween night with some very bright fireball meteors - and if you're very lucky - you may see an exploding meteor known as a bolide. The Patch has details on how you can see them for the next few days.

IN THE SKY THIS WEEK - Comet A3 continues to shrink and fade as it recedes into the inky murk, Venus is in conjunction with orange Antares low in twilight on Friday, Halloween evening is moonless, but it offers three bright planets. Venus is very low and after dark, Saturn is the brightest little dot high toward the south-southeast. By about 10, Jupiter has climbed up to dominate the east. If you're very lucky you may catch some fireballs from the Taurids.
