The Productivity Commission report on the inquiry into the circular economy has finally been published. The report 'finds that the Australian Government can support sustainable and efficient materials use by reforming regulation, strengthening product stewardship obligations and fostering coordination and innovation.'

‘Making our economy more efficient and sustainable requires coordinated, ongoing efforts across portfolios and levels of government’ - Commissioner Joanne Chong.

The Productivity Commission's recommendations for governments include:

🦺 Establishing a Circular Economy Regulatory Reform Taskforce with federal, state and territory governments

🔋Progressing a national product stewardship scheme for small-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and investigate a similar scheme for EV batteries.

🏬Developing place-based initiatives to enable coordination, address distance challenges and support businesses to develop and share new ideas.

🛠️ Implementing the recommendations from the PC's #RighttoRepair inquiry

It is an interesting situation. The compromise text would allegedly enshrine Integrated Pest Management as a legal obligation, but drop binding reduction targets and restrictions for sensitive areas. 1/n

Yesterday, the @europarl_en rejected the proposed regulation on #SustainableUse of #Pesticides. The @EUCouncil still has to decide on its own position.

One of the issues I keep seeing is that these newly developing walkable urban areas seem to focus on boutique businesses without solid long term prospects and without appeal to folks who really need walkability more than specialised high end commerce. Organically grown walkable urban areas can’t happen if we continue to focus on only high end commerce.
