A face-like Lectern style sundial in the garden of Greenbank House near Glasgow. This may be an original 16th century sundial, or it may be a later replica of an earlier design. Lectern sundials are one of the three types of ancient Scottish sundials. They can also be found in some parts of continental Europe, particularly the Netherlands, which was a major trading partner of Scotland at the time.

Time Flies... When You're Having Fun!

I looked at books and prints with The Popup Lady for 6 hours on Friday! Several early ones had to do with my favorite timekeeping device, the sundial! Here's a 17th c. French manuscript with some playful interactives.

That little triangle lifts to cast a shadow! Reminds me a of our "pop-up protractor" dial from the Newberry, but a century earlier! https://mobile.twitter.com/DrKarrSchmidt/status/1376874347801944072

The playing card on the back of the sundial holds the knot in place! #SundialSunday

“Pop-Up PROTRACTOR? This tricky dial not only rotates 360 degrees, but boasts a double-sided semicircle that lifts and is supposed to help determine latitude or longitude. Juan González de Urueña, Delineacion... Madrid, 1740. #NewberryLibrary https://t.co/In0Fl32pLT #3D #volvelle”

One of two impressive, 15 feet high sundials at Newbattle Abbey College. The main parts are from 1635, although the plinths are 19th century. The octagonal dial stone is supported by four odd winged sphinxes, and features rows of bronze gnomons below family emblems, initials and carved stone profiles which also act as sundials. Above the main block is a ring of bearded heads, four balls and an obelisk with needle finial.
