Sharon Van Etten's Seventeen is a Stone Cold Classic.
A film for every alienated soul without a natural niche within our tyrannical conformity. Not only do the performances and the Noir plot lend itself to lyrical romanticism, but Ray’s flamboyant camerawork and compositions (particularly the intimate facial close-ups versus the bird’s eye view shots of lost souls) also reinforce this paean to the outsiders in our world. To do all of this within a tight budget and inside the tramlines of studio conformity is a minor miracle. You can see why Ray is so beloved by film fans the world over.
