1000 Day Album Challenge (#15) Bill Withers: Still Bill (1972) [15.01.24]
you can fill up a room with idle conversation / you can stir up a whole darn nation with your mouth…
Still Bill is Bill Withers’ second studio album and one of my favorite soul albums ever. it features one of his most beloved songs and only #1 single, Lean On Me. as much as I love the song and enjoy it any time I hear it, the times I hear it in the wild would be quite enough without ever having had to own the album. for me, this record is more about its subtle, sly and funky grooves.
one of those subtle, sly and funky grooves, Use Me, I associate with Matty, who was a late night regular of ours at Time Out Tavern in Costa Rica. he was usually in a few times a week and at least a few times a month he would say something like, “you know what I want to hear Glenn.” so within a song or two I would cue up Use Me on the iPod.
for those of you who might not be fully versed in Bill Withers’ grooves the other tunes on Still Bill that fit this mold are Who is He (And What is He to You)?, Kissing My Love, and Take It All In and Check It All Out. they have all been sampled extensively except for Take It All In and Check It All Out. which is not to say that these are the only good tunes on Still Bill, just that they are the ones that define my memories and reflections upon it.
